Waste planning

What can go in a Birmingham skip?

Different materials can affect the right skip, the loading approach and whether separate handling is needed. Check before delivery if you are unsure.

Common project waste

Start by separating the main material groups.

This guide is intentionally practical. Confirm any unusual, hazardous or restricted item with the team before booking.

01

Household clear-outs

Furniture, fixtures, general non-hazardous household waste and decluttering material may be suitable depending on the item.

02

Garden projects

Garden waste, old outdoor fixtures and soil or rubble can need different planning because of weight and volume.

03

Building work

Rubble, timber, plasterboard and mixed renovation waste should be discussed before the skip arrives.

04

Restricted items

Ask before loading if any material is hazardous, liquid, electrical or potentially contaminated.

Stop and check

Some materials need separate advice.

Do not assume that a general skip is suitable for every material. Ask before loading if the waste includes anything unusual, hazardous, liquid, electrical or potentially contaminated.

Not sure?

Describe the material on a call.

A short conversation can prevent a rejected load or an unsuitable booking.

Plasterboard and gypsum

Keep plasterboard identifiable and discuss a separate collection or agreed handling route before mixing it with renovation waste. Government guidance says gypsum-based waste must not go into a landfill cell that accepts biodegradable waste. See the government guidance on waste sent to landfill.

Sofas and upholstered chairs

Upholstered domestic seating can contain persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and needs specific waste handling. Do not assume a general household skip can take it. List each item before booking and read the government’s upholstered-seating waste guidance.

Suspected hazardous materials

Keep asbestos, chemicals, paint, batteries and electrical equipment out of a general load unless a suitable specialist route has been agreed. If asbestos is suspected, stop handling it and seek competent advice. This site does not advertise asbestos removal.

Check acceptance before loading

The examples above are planning guidance, not a confirmed acceptance list. Contact the team with the exact materials, read the construction-waste guide or house-clearance guide, and use the skip-size guide to prepare your enquiry.

For additional safety guidance, read the government overview of hazardous-waste disposal. Acceptance must still be agreed for the actual load.

Quick answers

Before you make an enquiry.

What cannot go into a skip?

Do not load asbestos, chemicals, paint, batteries or electrical equipment into a general skip without an agreed specialist route. Plasterboard and upholstered seating also need specific handling checks. Confirm the accepted waste list before loading.
